L'isola è stata un accampamento stagionale per i pescatori di Panulirus cygnus (una specie di aragosta) sin dall'inizio del XX secolo, e questo rimane il principale obiettivo dell'attività umana sull'isola. C'è anche una piccola attività turistica e una pista d'atterraggio, ma per la maggior parte è riservata come habitat di conservazione della vegetazione e di molte specie di uccelli.

Geografia

North Island ha una superficie di circa 1,8 km²[1] e un'altezza massima di 13 m; si trova circa 14 km a nord-ovest del Wallabi Group.

Storia

Il primo avvistamento registrato di North Island è avvenuto nel maggio 1840, durante il terzo viaggio di rilevamento della HMS Beagle, comandata da John Clements Wickham.

North Island is the northernmost island in the Houtman Abrolhos, a coral reef archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mid West Western Australia. Located about 14 km (9 mi) from the nearest island group, it is one of the largest islands in the Houtman Abrolhos, and one of the few to support dune systems. It has relatively diverse flora dominated by chenopod shrubs and fauna that includes the introduced tammar wallaby, around seven species of reptile, and about 15 resident bird species.

L’île du Nord, en anglais North Island, est l'île la plus septentrionale de l'archipel d'Houtman Abrolhos, un groupe de récifs coralliens situé dans l'océan Indien à 57 kilomètres au large des côtes de la région du Mid West en Australie-Occidentale et à 109 kilomètres au nord-ouest de la ville de Geraldton. Située à environ 14 kilomètres du groupe d'îles la plus proche, c'est l'une des plus grandes îles de l'archipel et l'une des rares à posséder des dunes. Elle possède une flore relativement diversifiée dominée par des arbustes chénopodes et une faune qui comprend le wallaby de l'île Eugène introduit par l'homme sur l'île, environ 7 espèces de reptiles et 15 espèces d'oiseaux résidents.
