I 58,93 km² sono controllati dalla United States Navy, che svolge sull'isola test di armi e percorsi di training per i 200 militari che vi risiedono. Dal censimento della popolazione, però, l'isola risulta disabitata.

Storia

Originariamente l'isola era la patria del popolo Nicoleño, che erano probabilmente legati al popolo dei Tongva della vicina isola di Catalina. Il nome attuale, in onore a San Nicola, fu attribuito dall'esploratore spagnolo Sebastián Vizcaíno, dopo che ebbe raggiunto la terra in 6 dicembre 1602, appunto giorno del santo.

Il popolo dei Nicoleño fu evacuato nei primi dell'800 dai missionari californiani dopo che un conflitto tra russi e aleuti ebbe decimato la popolazione. Nel giro di pochi anni, comunque, la popolazione e il linguaggio si estinsero, e, in particolare, nel 1853 morì Juana Maria, l'ultima donna originaria dell'isola dei Nicoleños.

Tra il 1957 e il 1973, e nel 2004, i militari della marina americana lanciarono razzi di ricerca dall'isola. Attualmente vi è installato il Naval Research Lab Tower.

San Nicolas Island (Spanish: Isla de San Nicolás; Tongva: Haraasnga)[1] is the most remote of the Channel Islands, off of Southern California, 61 miles (98 km) from the nearest point on the mainland coast. It is part of Ventura County. The 14,562 acre (58.93 km2 or 22.753 sq mi) island is currently controlled by the United States Navy and is used as a weapons testing and training facility, served by Naval Outlying Landing Field San Nicolas Island. The uninhabited island is defined by the United States Census Bureau as Block Group 9, Census Tract 36.04 of Ventura County, California.[2] The Nicoleño Native American tribe inhabited the island until 1835. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the island has since remained officially uninhabited, though the census estimates that at least 200 military and civilian personnel live on the island at any given time. The island has a small airport, though the 10,000 foot (3,000 m) runway is the second longest in Ventura County (slightly behind the 11,102 ft (3,384 m) one at the Naval Air Station Point Mugu). Additionally, there are several buildings including telemetry reception antennas.[3]
