Whiddy Island est une île située dans la baie de Bantry au sud de l'Irlande.

Elle mesure environ 5,6 km de long sur 2,4 km de large.

L'île a été brièvement utilisée par les États-Unis en tant que base aérienne pendant la Première Guerre mondiale[1].

Elle héberge le seul terminal pétrolier d'Irlande. Le phare de Sheep's Head dirige les pétroliers vers celui-ci.

En janvier 1979 le pétrolier Bételgeuse y a explosé, provoquant la mort de 49 personnes.

Whiddy Island (irisch: Oileán Faoide) ist eine Insel vor dem Ort Bantry am Ende der Bantry Bay, im County Cork in Irland. Sie ist etwa 5,5 km lang und 2 km breit. Küstennah vorgelagert schirmt Whiddy Island den Hafen von Bantry gegen die See ab. Die Insel wird vom Bantry Pier aus von einer Fähre angelaufen.

Whiddy Island (Irish: Oileán Faoide)[2] is an island near the head of Bantry Bay in Ireland. It is approximately 5.6 km (3.5 mi) long and 2.4 km (1.5 mi) wide. The topography comprises gently-rolling glacial till, with relatively fertile soil.[3] As late as 1880 the island had a resident population of around 450, mainly engaged in fishing and small-scale farming, but today the population has reduced to approximately 20 people.[1][4][5] Previously home to Whiddy Island Naval Air Station, the island is noted for its oil terminal facilities – and the related Whiddy Island Disaster.
