Il s'agissait à l'origine de deux îlots : Great Mill Rock et Little Mill Rock, séparés par un fossé. Après le déroctage spectaculaire du détroit de Hell Gate (10 octobre 1885), les déblais purent être réemployés en 1890 pour combler le fossé. Ces deux îlots ne forment plus depuis qu'une seule île : celle de Mill Rock[1].

Mill Rock is a small uninhabited island between Manhattan and Queens in New York City. It lies about 1,000 feet (300 m) off Manhattan's East 96th Street,[1] south of Randalls and Wards Islands, where the East River and Harlem River converge. Mill Rock is located at Hell Gate, formerly an infamously treacherous area for ships to pass.
