Margit-sziget [ˈmɒɾgit ˈsigɛt] est une île du Danube située au centre-nord de Budapest. Elle est actuellement recouverte par des espaces verts et est considérée comme le « poumon » de Budapest par ses habitants. Elle est parfois connue sous la traduction calquée « Île Marguerite » en français. Elle abrite le quartier de Margitsziget rattaché au 13^e arrondissement.

Elle est reliée aux rives de la ville : au nord par le Árpád híd et au sud par le Margit híd.

Histoire

Le nom de l'île vient de sainte Marguerite, fille du roi Béla IV, qui y résida dans un couvent dominicain jusqu'à sa mort en 1271[1]. À cette époque, l'île était nommée l'Île des Lièvres (Nyulak szigete).

Die Margareteninsel (ungarisch Margit-sziget) ist die bekannteste Donauinsel in der ungarischen Hauptstadt Budapest. Sie befindet sich im Stadtzentrum, zwischen den beiden Stadthälften Buda und Pest, und ist durch die Margaretenbrücke im Süden und durch die Árpádbrücke im Norden mit jeweils beiden verbunden. Die Insel hat eine Länge von etwa 2,5 km, eine Fläche von 0,965 km² und ist durch ihre ausgedehnten Parkanlagen sowohl bei Touristen als auch bei der Budapester Bevölkerung als Erholungsort bekannt und beliebt. Die Insel ist zu Fuß, per Straßenbahn (über die Margaretenbrücke) und Fahrrad erreichbar und frei von privatem Autoverkehr. Kraftfahrzeuge sind auf der autofreien Insel im Allgemeinen verboten, Personentransport erfolgt mit Taxis, Bussen und den so genannten bringóhintó, Rikscha-ähnlichen Fahrrädern. Radfahren ist erlaubt.

Margaret Island (Hungarian: Margitsziget [ˈmɒrɡit.siɡɛt]; German: Margareteninsel; Turkish: Kızadası) is a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long island, 500 m (550 yd) wide, (0.965 km2 (238 acres) in area) in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious centre. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north). Before the 14th century the island was called Insula leporum (Island of Rabbits). Administratively Margaret Island used to belong to the 13th district, but now is directly under the control of the city.
