    Longboat Key est au sud de l’île Anna Maria, entre la baie de Sarasota et le golfe du Mexique.

    Selon la légende, un homme de Hernando de Soto y aura accosté en chaloupe (longboat en anglais) avant le reste de l'équipage. Pour d'autres, la ville doit son nom au Longboat Inlet, un passage d'eau peu profond entre la Longboat Key et Anna Maria, qu'on ne peut que traverser en chaloupe[1].

    Selon le recensement de 2010, Longboat Key compte 6 888 habitants[3]. La municipalité s'étend sur 16,00 milles carrés (41,44 km2), dont 4,13 milles carrés (10,7 km2) de terres[3]. Environ 65 % de la population et de la superficie de la ville se trouvent dans le comté de Sarasota[3].

    Longboat Key is a town in Manatee and Sarasota counties along the central west coast of the U.S. state of Florida, located on and coterminous with the barrier island of the same name. Longboat Key is south of Anna Maria Island, between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is almost equally divided between Manatee and Sarasota counties. The town of Longboat Key was incorporated in 1955 and is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's population was 6,888 at the 2010 census,[4] down from 7,603 at the 2000 census. It was back up to 7,505 in the 2020 census.
