Histoire

L'île est connue comme le lieu de naissance de Saint Ciarán. La population de l'île était de 1052 personnes avant la Grande famine, en 2006 elle dépasse à peine 10 % de ce nombre. Chaque premier week-end de septembre depuis 1994, Clear Island accueille le « Cape Clear Island Storytelling Festival International » (Festival international de Conte de Cape Clear Island).

Son phare a été remplacé, en 1854, par celui du Fasnet sur Fastnet Rock situé à 6 800 m au sud-ouest.

Cape Clear Island (auch Clear Island; gäl. Cléire oder Oileán Chléire) ist die südlichste bewohnte Insel Irlands, bzw. nach dem 6,5 km südwestlich gelegenen unbewohnten Fastnet Rock die zweitsüdlichste überhaupt. Sie liegt im Südwesten des County Cork, ist drei Kilometer lang, max. 1,5 km breit und hat etwa 120 Bewohner. Ein Isthmus teilt sie in zwei ungleiche Hälften. Ihr Nordhafen ist von Baltimore oder von Schull auf der Mizen-Halbinsel aus per Boot zu erreichen. Der Südhafen ist Liegeplatz für Jachten.

Clear Island or Cape Clear Island (officially known by its Irish name: Cléire, and sometimes also called Oileán Chléire)[2][3] is an island off the south-west coast of County Cork in Ireland. It is the southernmost inhabited part of Ireland and has a population of 147 people. It is an official Gaeltacht area (Irish-speaking area), and most inhabitants speak Irish and English. Its nearest neighbouring island is Sherkin Island, which is 2 km (1 mi) east of the Cape Clear Island. The island is divided into east and west halves by an isthmus called the Waist, with the North Harbour to the landward side and the South Harbour on the seaward side.[4] Ferries sail regularly from the North Harbour to Schull and Baltimore on the mainland. The South Harbour is a popular berth for yachts and pleasure boats.
