L'île de Chizumulu est la plus petite des deux îles du lac Malawi (l'autre étant celle de Likoma). Bien qu'enclavée dans les eaux territoriales du Mozambique, elle fait partie du Malawi, les deux îles formant le district de Likoma.

La raison de cette enclave est la colonisation de ces deux îles par des missionnaires anglicans.

Elle comprend environ 4 000 habitants qui doivent importer leurs ressources alimentaires et leur électricité de la terre ferme pour pouvoir subsister. Elle est donc autant victime de son enclavement que Likoma, qui elle possède une piste d'atterrissage.

Chizumulu ist eine kleine Insel im Malawisee. Sie gehört zu Malawi, befindet sich aber als Enklave mit ihrer Nachbarinsel Likoma in den Hoheitsgewässern von Mosambik.

Chizumulu Island is the smaller of two islands in Lake Malawi, the larger being the nearby Likoma island, which together make up the Likoma District. Both these islands lie just a few kilometres from Mozambique and are entirely surrounded by Mozambican territorial waters, but they belong to Malawi. They are therefore exclaves of Malawi. This came about because the islands were colonised by Anglican missionaries spreading east from Nyasaland, rather than by the Portuguese who colonised Mozambique. The British originally claimed the entire Lake Nyasa/Lake Malawi, but in 1954 signed an agreement with Portugal, which recognized the centre of the lake as the boundary between their holdings and Mozambique, and making these islands an enclave.[1]

L'isola di Chizumulu è la più piccola delle due isole abitate del Lago Malawi; con la più grande e vicina isola di Likoma, costituisce il Distretto di Likoma. Entrambe le isole appartengono al Malawi ma si trovano a pochi chilometri dal Mozambico e sono interamente circondate dalle acque territoriali mozambicane. Sono quindi exclavi del Malawi. Ciò è dovuto alla colonizzazione delle isole da parte di missionari anglicani che si trovavano a est dal Nyasaland, mentre i portoghesi colonizzavano il Mozambico. Gli inglesi originariamente rivendicavano l'intero lago Malawi, ma nel 1954 firmarono un accordo con il Portogallo che riconosceva il centro del lago come confine tra i loro possedimenti e il Mozambico, e rendeva queste isole un'exclave[1].
