Ao-shima (青島, Aoshima^?, littéralement « île bleue ») ou Iyo Ao-shima (伊予青島, Iyo Aoshima^?) est une île située dans la mer ouverte d'Iyo (伊予灘, Iyo nada^?) de la mer intérieure de Seto, dépendant administrativement de la ville d'Ōzu dans la préfecture d'Ehime, au Japon.

Géographie

D'une superficie de 0,49 km², Ao-shima n’est peuplée que d'une vingtaine d'habitants.

Île aux chats

Elle est surnommée l’île aux chats (猫の島, neko no shima^?), car on y trouve environ 120 chats, soit six chats par personne, ce qui fait de l'île un site touristique[1]. Les chats ont été introduits sur l'île pour la dératiser puis se sont multipliés, n’ayant pas de prédateurs[2].

Aoshima (青島, Aoshima), also known as Cat Island (猫の島, Neko no shima), is an island in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, known for its large number of feline residents. Felines have been reported by news outlets to outnumber humans by ratios between 6:1[2] and 10:1,[3] but as elderly inhabitants of the island have died, the ratio has greatly increased to almost 36:1.[note 1] Felines were introduced to combat rodents on fishing boats, but remained on the island and reproduced in large numbers.[5][6][2]
