Le parc national de Pigeon Island est l'un des deux parcs nationaux maritimes du Sri Lanka. Le nom de l'île provient des pigeons qui l'ont colonisé.

Le parc est situé à 1 km de la cote de Nilaveli, une ville côtière de la province de l'Est, et possède une superficie de 471,429 hectares. L'île Pigeon a obtenu le statut de sanctuaire en 1963. En 2003, ce statut a été renommé par le titre de parc national.

Ce parc national est le 17^e au Sri Lanka. L'île a été utilisée comme champ de tir pendant l'ère coloniale[1]. L'île de Pigeon est l'une des nombreuses zones protégées touchées par le tsunami de l'océan Indien en 2004.

Pigeon Island National Park is one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka. The national park is situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in Eastern Province, encompassing a total area of 471.429 hectares. The island's name derives from the rock pigeon which has colonized it. The national park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka.[1] Pigeon Island was designated as a sanctuary in 1963. In 2003 it was re-designated as a national park. This national park is the 17th in Sri Lanka. The island was used as a shooting range during the colonial era.[2] Pigeon Island is one of the several protected areas affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.[3]
