Toponymie
Le qualificatif de Genovesa, qui se traduit par Génoise en français, rend hommage à la ville italienne de Gênes dont était originaire Christophe Colomb.
Quant à l'appellation Tower, elle est inexpliquée. On doit se contenter de signaler qu'on rencontre pour la première fois ce nom en 1832 dans les récits de voyages de l'explorateur américain et capitaine de phoquier Benjamin Morrell[1], puis sur une carte[2] du récit de Robert FitzRoy, capitaine du HMS Beagle, paru en 1841[3].

Genovesa (englisch auch Tower Island) gehört zu den Galápagos-Inseln und wird aufgrund ihrer ungewöhnlichen Vogelwelt häufig besucht. Auf der 14 km² großen Insel leben viele Rotfußtölpel sowie drei Darwinfinkenarten. Daneben findet man Rotschnabel-Tropikvögel und Sturmschwalben. Die zwei Besucherplätze sind Prince Phillip’s Steps mit einem Wanderweg über die Klippen zu vielen Vogelnestern und Darwin Beach, wo man auch schnorcheln kann.[en] Genovesa Island
Genovesa Island (Spanish: Isla Genovesa), referred to in English as Tower Island, is a shield volcano in the Galápagos Islands in the eastern Pacific Ocean.[1] The island occupies about 14 square kilometres (5 sq mi), and its maximum elevation is 64 m (210 ft).[citation needed] The horse-shoe shaped island has a volcanic caldera whose wall has collapsed, forming the Great Darwin Bay, surrounded by cliffs.[2] Lake Arcturus, filled with salt water, lies in the centre, and sediment within this crater lake is less than 6,000 years old.
