Les écueils de Gunnbjörn (Gunnbjarnarsker) étaient un groupe de petits écueils situés entre l'Islande et le Groenland, découvert par Gunnbjörn Ulfsson au IX^e siècle.

Histoire

Ils deviennent une escale habituelle pour les navires qui font route vers le Groenland et une brève tentative de création d'une colonie est menée vers 970. Snæbjörn Galti y atterrit vers 978. Une tentative ultérieure réussit et en 1391 dix-huit fermes sont installées sur l'îlot[1].

Selon le planisphère de Ruysch de 1507, les îles sont « complètement incendiées » en 1456[2], c'est-à-dire probablement détruites par une éruption volcanique. Ivar Bardsen les mentionne dans son ouvrage Description du Groenland au XIV^e siècle. Sur des cartes postérieures, jusqu'en 1700, comme Pascaert van Groenlandt de Jan van Keulen[3], les hauts-fonds formés par les restes de l'éruption sont inscrits sous le nom de Gombar Scheer[4].

L'emplacement des anciennes îles n'est pas exactement connu. Le capitaine Wilhelm Graah leur donne pour position de 65° N, 30° O[3]^,[5], mais la position 69° N, 17° O est plus probable^{[réf. nécessaire]}.

Gunnbjörn's skerries (Gunnbjarnarsker) were a group of small islands lying close between Iceland and Greenland, discovered by Gunnbjörn Ulfsson in the 9th century. They became a popular stopover for ships traveling to Greenland and a brief attempt to set up a colony was made about 970. Snæbjörn Galti visited around 978. A later attempt succeeded and by 1391 there were 18 farms on the islands.[1] Apparently in 1456, according to Ruysch's 1507 map, the islands "completely burned up",[2] i.e. were destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Ivar Bardsen mentions them in his work "Description of Greenland in the Fourteenth Century". On later maps, as late as 1700, such as Jan van Keulen's "Pascaert van Groenlandt",[3] the shoals formed by the remains of the explosion was noted with the name "Gombar Scheer".[4]
