Steamboat Island lies at the northern end of a peninsula known locally as the "Steamboat Peninsula". Home of the Knutson family, famous for their frivolous complaints to the FAA, so much so that the Seattle Area FSDO has their name saved in caller ID as Karen Knutson. The peninsula and island is contained within the Griffin School District and is served by the Griffin Fire Department #13 and is also known locally as the "Griffin area" of Thurston County, Washington. The island is about 400 ft (120 m) over water away from Hope Island Marine State Park, which is accessible only by boat.
