Das Pinipel-Atoll bildet mit dem etwa 2 km südlich gelegenen Atoll Nissan die Atollgruppe der Green Islands. Die Atolle liegen im Pazifischen Ozean ca. 130 km östlich der Insel Neuirland (Papua-Neuguinea).

Geographie

Das Atoll wird von der schmalen Hauptinsel Pinipel, die die gesamte Ostseite des Atolls umfasst, beherrscht. Auf dem nordwestlichen Riffkranz liegen die unbewohnten Eilande Sentinel und Sau.

Bevölkerung

Das Atoll hatte nach dem Zensus von 2000 rund 900 Bewohner[1].

Pinipel Island, also known as Green Island,[1] is the northern of the two atolls making up the Green Islands, east of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. It is located north of Nissan Island, the southern atoll. It is about 330 feet (101 m) high and cliffy, from 200 to 500 yards (183 to 457 m) wide, except at the north end.[2]
