Der United States Geological Survey kartierte die Insel anhand eigener Vermessungen und Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy aus den Jahren von 1959 bis 1966. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte sie 1967 nach Konteradmiral Ira Hudson Nunn (1901–1998), Verantwortlicher für rechtliche Fragen im Rahmen der Unterstützung der Arbeiten im Rahmen des Internationalen Geophysikalischen Jahres (1957–1958) durch die US Navy.

Nunn Island is an ice-covered island, 17 kilometres (9 nmi) long, lying within Getz Ice Shelf just south of Wright Island, along the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for R. Admiral Ira Nunn, U.S. Navy, responsible for legal elements of the Navy's Antarctic support during the IGY.
