Der United States Geological Survey kartierte sie anhand eigener Vermessungen und mithilfe von Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy aus den Jahren zwischen 1959 und 1965. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte sie 1966 nach James Franklin Newman, Stabsoffizier in der sogenannten Task Force 43 bei der Operation Deep Freeze des Jahres 1966.

Newman Island is an ice-covered island 28 kilometres (15 nmi) long, lying in the Nickerson Ice Shelf on the coast of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. It was mapped from surveys by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Navy air photos (1959–65), and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Cdr. J.F. Newman, USN, ships officer on the staff of the Commander, Task Force 43, during Operation Deep Freeze 1966.
