Das UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee benannte die Insel 1960 nach der HMS Chanticleer, mit der Henry Foster am 7. Januar 1829 in den Gewässern um diese Insel operierte.

The island was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 after HMS Chanticleer (Captain Henry Foster), whose party made a landing in this vicinity on January 7, 1829.[1][2]
