Histoire
L'île de Thorney (« île aux épines » en vieil anglais) était située au confluent de la Tyburn et de la Tamise, un peu en amont de la Cité de Londres. C'est sur cette île que sont fondés l'abbaye et le palais de Westminster à l'époque anglo-saxonne.
Thorney n'existe plus depuis les travaux d'aménagement de la Tamise effectués au XIXe siècle. Il subsiste une Thorney Street dans le quartier de Westminster.

Thorney Island was the eyot (or small island) on the Thames, upstream of medieval London, where Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster (commonly known today as the Houses of Parliament) were built. It was formed by rivulets of the River Tyburn, which entered the Thames nearby. In Roman times, and presumably before, Thorney Island may have been part of a natural ford where Watling Street crossed the Thames,[1] of particular importance before the construction of London Bridge.- [fr] Thorney Island (Londres)

В XIX веке русло Тайберна было убрано под землю, а русло Темзы, разделяющее остров и остальной Вестминстер, засыпали, когда строили набережную Темзы.
